SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out Thursday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at Khonmoh village in the outskirts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, after militants attacked security guards of a local pro-India politician.

"Militants fired upon the two personal security officers of a political activist in Khonmoh, who repulsed the attack but in the incident one of them was wounded," a police spokesman said.

Following the attack, the area has been cordoned off by government forces.

"As per recent update a gunfight has begun and militants have been hold up," the spokesman said.

Local villagers said they heard the sound of gunfire and saw contingents of police and army in the area.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
